'Glorify' song lyrics by U2

Glorify was revealed to the world by U2 during their residency at the Las Vegas 'Sphere' in 2023. It's only been played and has not been formally released. Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes performs with the band, it appears she is the writer.

U2 uses the song as an opportunity to dive into familiar terrain—fusing spirituality with a gritty acknowledgment of life’s bleakness, questioning how to find meaning in a chaotic, indifferent world. Bono’s lyrics feel like an intimate dialogue with himself, torn between cynicism and the almost defiant choice to “glorify.” W

hen he sings, “So let your heart be fooled / Expect a miracle,” he suggests leaning into faith, even when it feels naive. The chorus’s invocation to glorify isn’t empty cheer; it’s a rebellion against despair, asking us to rise above the inevitable fall of “the heavens” and to find purpose in spite of it.

The apocalyptic imagery and phrases like “All the time, all the time” suggest a cycle of suffering wearily accepted, but still prompting a call to endure. Lines like “Can you see me? / No / When did it disappear?” bring an existential edge, evoking a disconnect between self and the world, as Bono reflects on identity and purpose in a way reminiscent of “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.”

The sun “can’t see itself shine,” yet it’s “not bothered”—a metaphor urging transcendence beyond ego, hinting that we’re “made from each other,” for each other, bound by a shared existence.

With “Glorify,” U2 challenges listeners not only to endure but to choose light in a world that dares us to look away—a quintessential U2 paradox of hope within resignation, faith within doubt.

'Glorify' song lyrics by U2

Baby, don't we all
Yeah, it happens
All the time, all the time

So let your heart be fooled
Expect a miracle
They're looking for you
To glorify, glorify

As the heavens fall
Baby, don't we all
Let it happen
All the time, all the time

You're looking for bad news
The kind I can't refuse
But still I choose
To glorify, glorify

(Choir: Ah, ah, ah, ah)
(Choir: glorify, glorify)

Can you see me?
No
When did it disappear?
Can you hear me?
No
What is it that you don't want to be?

The sun can't see itself shine
But the sun isn't bothered
Made for each other, (you) and I
Because we're made from each other

As the heavens call
Baby, don't we all
Let it happen
All the time, all the time

So let your heart be fooled
Expect a miracle
They're looking for you
To glorify, glorify

As the heavens go
Baby, don't we all
Yeah, it happens All the time, all the time

You're nothing but bad news
I rather refuse
Until I choose
To glorify, glorify

Many folk have wondered if this song was going to be part of Songs of Ascent but the musical style doesn't keep in line with songs that are inspired by the Psalms...
