"Atomic City" arrived hours before U2 took the stage at the Sphere in Las Vegas for the opening night of their U2:UV residency — a full-run performance of Achtung Baby inside a state-of-the-art multimedia arena. The song wasn't a teaser. It was a statement.

Produced by Jacknife Lee and Steve Lillywhite at Sound City in Los Angeles, the track plants itself in '70s post-punk territory: Blondie's cool, Giorgio Moroder's pulse. Lillywhite, who produced Boy and the band's early records, brings the continuity. Lee brings the edge. Together they've given U2 a sound that feels like rediscovery rather than nostalgia.

The title isn't just a Las Vegas nickname. Before the casinos defined Sin City, the Nevada Test Site was putting mushroom clouds on the horizon in the 1950s, and Las Vegas leaned into it — atomic tourism was real, with hotel viewing parties and bomb-blast cocktails on the menu. The song carries that history lightly, but the resonance holds: a city built on spectacle, risk, and visible fallout.

"You just have to be right one more time than you're wrong" — a gambler's philosophy that fits Las Vegas perfectly, and U2's entire career even better.

The music video, directed by Ben Kutchins with visual production by Tarik Mikou of Moment Factory Music, was shot on Fremont Street — the same strip where U2 filmed "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" more than thirty years earlier. Same city, different century, same band still looking.

Beneath the neon and the history, "Atomic City" is a love song to the crowd. "Where you are is where I'll be." It's a simple line and that's the point. After decades, cities, masks, and reinventions, that's still what U2 is saying.

"Atomic City" — Lyrics

[Verse 1]

Come all you stars falling out of the sky
Come all you angels forgetting to fly
Come all who feel we're not on our own
All UFOs come on your way home
Alone, that's no way to be carrying on
Come on, we're betting on a future that's long
Gone, in look of a song
You just have to be right one more time then you're wrong

[Refrain]

Atomic City (Atomic)
Oh, oh
Atomic City (Atomic)
Oh, oh

[Chorus]

I'm free
Where you are is where I'll be
I'm free
So unexpectedly

[Verse 2]

Come all who serve above and below
Come all believers and all who don't know
Come quick, come soon, comme ci, comme ça
Then you dive into your eyes and blah blah blah
Guitars, she pulls the strings et cetera
Sinatra swings, a choir sings
Love is god and god is love
And if your dreams don't scare you, they're not big enough

[Chorus / Refrain]

Atomic City (Atomic)
Oh, oh
Atomic City
Atomic Sun for everyone
For everyone

[Bridge]

Roll the dice
That's roulette
The beat has not stopped
Speeding yet

[Chorus]

I'm free
Where you are is where I'll be
I'm free
So unexpectedly

[Outro]

I'm free
I see what's in front of me
And your freedom is contagious
What you've got I wanna be
I'm free
It took me my whole life
I got the keys to the cages
I'm ready for bright lights
I'm free
I came here for the fight
I'm front row in Las Vegas
And there's a big one on tonight

"Atomic City" can only remind us of the question asked on How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.

The answer, of course, is with love.
