Every carnival needs someone at the gate calling the crowd inside, and "Go (Carnaval De Luz)" is the song given that job. As the opener of Carnaval de Luz, U2's first full album of new songs in nine years, it carries the record's name in its own title, which usually marks a mission statement rather than a warm-up. It arrives in the same week the band marked 50 years since Larry Mullen Jr. pinned his drummer-wanted note to the Mount Temple noticeboard, and a single imperative word feels deliberate: move, begin, don't wait.

Eno at the starting line

Brian Eno co-writes and plays synth here, one of three songs on the album carrying his fingerprints. That matters for an opener. Eno has historically pulled U2 toward texture and atmosphere, the feeling of a room being lit before anyone sings in it. The band has said the record echoes its most experimental work, and the first track is the most likely place to hear that, with the bracketed "carnival of light" in the title hinting at colour and noise arriving all at once.

A command, not a question

Bono framed the album as an invitation into a carnival with dark creatures pacing just beyond its glow, and his answer to them was louder drums and a bigger fire. "Go" reads as the ignition point for that idea: defiance expressed as momentum. It also sets up the album's bookends. Where this track pushes the crowd forward, the closer, Torn, turns inward toward family and loss.
