Few bands have staged bigger shows than U2, from Zoo TV to the Las Vegas Sphere, so a song with this title can't help but carry some self-awareness. Brian Eno co-writes and plays synth, yet the band singled it out as one of the album's more tightly written songs, which suggests a strong melody at its core rather than a sprawling experiment. The joke, if there is one, may be on the band as much as anyone.

Is the show the point?

The question hanging over any big spectacle is whether it lifts people up or distracts them. The Mirror Maker looks hard at illusion; this song seems to embrace it, betting that a shared experience can still mean something real.
